It is 22 times safer flying in a commercial jet in the United States than traveling by car, according to a study by the U.S. National Safety Council comparing accident fatalities per million passenger-miles traveled.

Aviation litigation is complex. Most people do not realize the frequency airline accidents do occur, however, because only the accidents with fatalities are covered in the media. Airline accidents can occur on the runway.
